Feed My Starving Children

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian Hunger Relief Organization founded in Minnesota, which opened a 4th plant in Chicago, IL. In 1987, a Minnesota businessman asked the assistance of food scientists at General Mills and Cargill to develop a scientifically formulated food that is easy to make and provides necessary nutrients to starving children in over 50 countries. Each food packet costs about $0.15 to make and consists of rice, soy nuggets, vitamins, minerals, a vegetarian chicken flavoring, and dehydrated vegetables. These packets are put together entirely with volunteer help (80% of the volunteers are age 18, or under). That is where Presbyterian Church of the Way gets involved.
In the past few years, over 100 PCOTW members and friends have packaged over 30,000 meals. Not only have we traveled as a group from church, but our members have gone with girl scouts, school groups, birthday parties, and a bridal shower to serve at FMSC. When we first went, FMSC had us make as many packets as we could in two hours. Unfortunately, now we can only make as many packets for which monetary donations have purchased ingredients.
Last fall, on Rally Day, the Mission Commission handed out M&M containers, asked that individuals return them filled with $14.00 in quarters; enough to make over 93 packets of food. Each packet serves about 6 people, so $14.00 is enough to serve about 560 people one meal. On March 21st, 42 PCOTW members and friends went to FMSC and brought $1,011.03 (95% of that amount was used for the cost of the ingredients).
This coming Rally Day — Sunday, September 7th — the Mission Commission will again hand out the mini M&M containers to fill with $14.00 in quarters for FMSC. Continue to save your quarters to help starving children around the world!
