Deacons Introduction

The word 'deacon' is derived from the Greek verb diakonein, meaning 'to serve'. The first Deacons were called upon to wait on tables, a humble task; yet for the sacred responsibility within the framework of the church, they elected persons 'of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom' (Acts 6:3). At PCOTW, our board of 27 Deacons serves the compassionate ministries of our congregation.
Deacons serve because Jesus first served them. Jesus made our cause His own, sharing our existence in servitude and sharing with us His own life of love.
Shepherding Care Groups
All PCOTW members are part of a Deacon's care group. That Deacon will:
- Connect with the members - in person, via phone, email or card - to say hello, see how they are doing and if any support or special care is needed, ask them to help at church in some way, follow up on a surgery, illness or other memorable event, or inform them of events at church.
- Provide, as needed and requested, support and prayers during illnesses, hospitalization and other times when compassion and caring are especially needed.
Caring for Our Congregation through Service Areas

In addition to shepherding a Care Group, each Deacon on our board of 27 serves as a coordinator for one of the service areas that supports the overall care of our congregation.
The Coordinators see that members receive the care they need in the specific area by maintaining a list of other church members and deacons who are willing to help and by coordinating a group effort to provide support and connections.
Service areas include: Transportation, Hospital Visits,
Hospice and Grief Support, Meals in Need, New Members / Attendance / Worship CDs, Communion/Worship,
Greeters, Flowers, Support and Prayer, Communication, Young Adults, Kitchen and Administrative
Chairs.
